Romans Chapter 3

In Chapter 2, Paul reminds us that our ‘religion’ doesn’t make us any better in God’s eyes…. we’re still sinners. This week, Paul tells us that there is tremendous value in our Christian heritage, as well as tremendous responsibility. We can’t save our selves by following God’s law, rather, it’s through the law we recognize we’re sinners.
I’ve been teaching this age group for longer than these kids have been alive. I’ve found that getting kids who have been raised in good homes, faithfully attend church and attend the Christian school to understand that they are just as much under sin’s curse as the heathens is the most difficult part of the job. This is why Paul spends three chapters pounding this fact into our heads. And then, finally, THANKFULLY, Paul turns the corner and begins to lay out God’s sovereign plan of grace. Romans 3:21 contains the biggest ‘BUT’ of the Bible: “But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.”
This week’s poster is one of my favorites (click the picture above to see the whole thing). If you haven’t printed one out this year, I’d suggest this one- hang it up in your room or on the fridge or somewhere where it will keep reminding you of what Christ has done. The poster has a flaw, though, and if anyone can guess it, I’ll bring donuts for the class the next time we meet (this is a big deal- The snacks we had our first week was the first time in years where I allowed food)!
PS: Don’t forget to read chapter three in your home study book!
